I’m back!

September was of course not a good time for me. After finishing my internship I was expecting to write some damn good blog articles, but fate was against me this time. 😦

Early in the last month our home router seemed to be malfunctioning. We handed it over to claim the warranties, and till then no Internet… I almost felt like a woodcutter lost his ax. Today we got it back and now everything works very well! 🙂

But, during last three weeks,

  • I missed few career opportunities. 😦 😦 😦
  • I was not able to talk to my friend overseas (to whom I help to do a telecommunication project).
  • I was not able to visit my favorite social media sites.
  • I was not able to continuously stay in touch with SBU.

And now… when reading and reading stuff that I’ve missed during past weeks,

Feel like I belong to history!

However, I’m back! 🙂

I’m back!

It’s cool to see that Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat is scheduled to release on 2010.10.10. In every 6 months a new Ubuntu is born. Usually it’s April and October. This time it’s three tens in a row.

Yes, it’s 10.10 and I can’t even wait for the experience! Tomorrow I’ll be downloading the RC from SchoolNet. 🙂

Till the release version, see a countdown,

The next version of Ubuntu is coming soon

Blogger Custom Domain and SLTnet

I have noticed that Google blogger blogs are not accessible with SLTnet if they are configured to use custom domain. For example, http://blog.shaakunthala.com is not accessible with SLTnet at the moment.

This is not due to a misconfiguration of DNS, but a technical failure of SLTnet.

By default, http://ghs.google.com:80 should provide a ‘Not Found’ page. But with SLTnet connections, you’ll see a browser error like, ‘Unable to Connect’. This is the issue.
I have already informed SLTnet about this issue and waiting for their reply, and I’m writing this small note for bloggers, by the meantime do not mess up your DNS configuration.

LAMPP, what happened?

Yesterday evening I and one of my friends were testing a software project. It is a web application and he has tested it with XAMPP on Winows. He wanted to try it out on Apache/ Linux too. So he came to me (I’m a one of famous Linux-only guy around the campus 😉 ) and asked me to help.

I have a dual boot system with both Fedora 11 and Ubuntu 9.04 installed. First I put everything in LAMPP (on Ubuntu) and tested.

Yes, we’ve found some bugs with character case issues plus one fatal error with the TCPDF module when generating PDFs. The problem was with memory allocation and as the browser showed it was an error in tcpdf/unicode_data.php.

Then I put everything in Apache which came by default with Fedora DVD, and tested. Viola! The PDF generation problem was not there!!

I’m still wandering how it could be… same Apache-PHP-MySQL.

Anybody have an idea of what’s the problem here?

Fedora 11 ආවා!

As you may already know, Fedora 11 Leonidas edition has been released. I downloaded the DVD image (i386). With Imageshack torrent service it took just one hour and twenty two minutes to fetch. Then I downloaded it.

After downloading, the first thing you have to do is to check the image integrity. You need to download the CHECKSUM file associated with the iso image to do that (it’s just nearly 2 KB 😉 ). Here’s how to do it:

  • Put the iso image(s) you have downloaded in the same directory.
  • cd to that directory using the terminal.
  • Enter the following command (without the dollar sign — it means not under superuser):

$ sha256sum -c Fedora-11-i386-CHECKSUM

(Fedora-11-i386-CHECKSUM is the checksum filename we have downloaded)

Since the DVD image is quite large, it may take several minutes to complete the task. If you get a result similar to the following, then the disk image is OK and you can burn it onto DVD. Otherwise don’t waste writable DVDs 😉 .

Fedora-11-i386-DVD.iso: OK

FF too slow with Google Toolbar?

After installing Google Toolbar, has Firefox become too slow when opening a new tab? Yes, definetely in mine, Google’s New Tab Page (the page that you see when you open a new tab in Chrome which contains thumbnails of your favourite sites) has decereased Firefox’s performance in a considerable rate.

My solution is to disable this feature until the release of Firefox 3.5 which I believe to be more effective in memory management. Just click on the wrench icon on the toolbar. Under Web-browsing tools uncheck the option Enable New Tab Page.

Do you cheat on games?

Do you cheat on computer games? Better not to do so. Because, when not cheating, you are close to the reality, and you can nicely feel the spirit of gaming. Otherwise, it finishes too early, and you feel some sort of emptiness.

In GTA Vice City, if you cheat the score will reduce and get a minus value,.. especially when using the BIGBANG cheat. In Vice City, score is listed as the Criminal Rating, not the amount of dollars.

Anyway, if you still want to cheat, here is the right place to find all the cheats you’ll need.
